I’ve been listening to a Superbetter by Jane McGonigal on CD, and I think I could use some “power-ups” to help myself get through the last week of classes for the semester. I’ve signed up on Superbetter.com, but really, I want to create some goals and intentions the old fashioned way: on paper–I mean computer.
My main intention for this week is to take care of myself while I get the necessary work done. I have already graded a handful of final projects, I have a few in my bag to grade today (if I can get motivated), and then I should be collecting the rest this week. The grading is pretty easy; I just need to do it to be sure to get the work back to students during finals.
I could also use a list of things to do, my interpretation of McGonigal’s “power-ups” (short activities that boost motivation and/or make you feel better) to take the best care of my body and mind this week.
An Apple A Day Power-up: Eat a piece of fruit each day this week. The hardest part of this will be making sure to get to the grocery store.
Victory Power-up: Put my arms up in a V or do a 2+ second dance to increase confidence.
Hug the Dogs Power-up: If at home, find one of the two hounds and hug, pet, or kiss her. If at work, look up pictures of cute dogs, or bunnies (like the picture for this blog page).
Yoga Power-up: do 1 or more sun salutations or just sit and breathe for 30+ seconds.
Let’s start with these and see how they go.
What times of year do you need the most support? Do you have “cycles” at work where the work is harder and/or time you need to put in is increased? If so, how do you deal with them? What power-ups might work for you? Have you heard of Jane McGonigal and/or read any of her books?
Peace Out (and In)!

8 years ago AUTHORWell, I survived the last week of classes and finals week. Whew. I slacked on my power-ups overall. I need a new plan to hold myself accountable but before that . . . rest.
